Searching for that perfect PDA/Phone device.
February 27th, 2007 | by audit |Over the last 3 years, I’ve had mainly 3 phones.
- Treo 650
- Blackberry 7250
- Motorola E815
All 3 are great devices in their own way. As far as phone quality, the E815 was by far the best I’ve ever used. I always had signal with it in places where even my wife’s Razor wasn’t getting a signal. The Treo 650 is a great everyday phone for people on the go like mothers, Doctors, Lawyers, some IT people, Sales people. The Blackberry is the IMHO the most solid of the 3 devices. Now what I mean by solid is both my Treo and E815 reset at random times and better then 75% of those times were when I was either receiving an important e-mail/txt message or sending one or my favorite, when I was on a call.
My Blackberry just doesn’t reboot, no matter what software I load on it, it just never reboots. sure the signal isn’t as great as the E815 but it’s better then my Treo was and you can’t touch it when it comes to e-mail, I don’t care what e-mail software you load on your WM device or Treo. Since I use my phone for both work and personal usage, I really needed something that synced my calender, notes, contacts and tasks up for my doctors appointments for not only myself but also for my wife and kids so I always knew what was going on with them. There’s times when I forget or don’t have time to turn on my laptop and run a sync on it so everythings synced up on both devices so that’s why I’m glad that the BES server is in use.
During the last few weeks, I’ve been thinking about the perfect PDA/Phone device and what it should have. I don’t understand and maybe it’s because I really haven’t researched it yet, but why the hell do we need to have CDMA and GSM phones? Why can’t we have 1 standard and stick with it? CDMA smartphones won’t allow a phone call to come in when in an active data session such as researching a website or something like that when on your device. GSM does stop the data connection and allows the call to come in. Therefor your not missing a important call.
My perfect device would be the form of the 8700 series Blackberries and the sturdiness of the Blackberry. If I drop my BB for some reason, I’m not worried that it’s going to be dead or cracked. The QWERTY keyboard on the 8700’s are also very easy to type on compared to the Treo’s since it’s a wider device. I’m not a WM fan so scratch that OS on the perfect device and it looks like PALM is up in the air so who knows if they are even going to be around in the next couple years. I really liked the software that was available for the PalmOS as I always could find something to help me with my everyday duties either professionally or personal but couldn’t stand the resets and the fact that I had to sync everything up daily. So let’s combine an OS of Blackberry and Palm. Then we have a stable device and something that’s easy to find everyday software for.
Now I know I’m reaching and I really mean REACHING when I think of that perfect device and it’s something I’ll never see in my lifetime but it’s still something I hope for, even if it comes in my grandkids age. For now I’ll continue to stick with a SOLID device that I know will be there when I need it. Sure I don’t have all the software on it that i had on my Treo for creating documents, taking pictures of my kids when that perfect moment comes, etc but at least I know that I’m not missing a doctors appointment, kids activities, wife’s activities, etc because I didn’t have time or forgot to sync up with my calender.
I know I’ll get some bashing on this but at this point, I really don’t care. Everyone has their own opinion on what they think is the best smartphone for them and this is mine.
