Well I always thought I’d be the last one to say this but I guess social networking sites can be good for some things. I joined Facebook awhile back and got a request from a old school mate of mine that I grew up with from gradeschool on. His cousin and I were good friends for years but kinda lost touch after high school when he went his way with his music and I went my way with racing cars and computers.
So I asked his cousin if he’d heard from him lately and he said that he saw him at a funeral and he came up with a custom foot pedal for the guitar and has become very succesfull. He didn’t have any contact info for him so after some digging around, I was able to find his number and email address as well as his myspace account. Now god only knows I HATE myspace but my kids friends use it and I decided to let him use it as long as we monitor what’s going on. After 2 weeks of emailing and calling his damn cell that was full of VM’s so I wasn’t able to leave a message, he replied back to one of the emails. I felt like a kid again with what he said in the email reminding me about the times when my folks used to take us to the pro basketball games when we were kids.
So about an hour later he calls me and we talked for about 2hr’s just catching up and hearing about how he got started. Neither of us thought when we were kids that we’d end up where we’re at now with our lives. Hell neither of us thought even after high school that we’d be doing what we do. I always figured I’d see him playing in some major band on MTV or something like that because the guy is GREAT. We’ve talked a couple times this week and he’s going to come out to the house this weekend since he’s going to be in the area anyhow to see Karen and the kids. The last time we saw him, our son was 1 and we didn’t have our daughter yet. So I sent him a link to the family photo site that I keep for out of state family members and close friends and he had nothing but great things to say about my wife and kids. Now he’s not one to Bullshit anyone and always speaks his mind. I’ve grown up with him from the time we were in 1st grade together until after HS so we knew each other very well. He’s one of the few people, (count 3) people that I talk to from my childhood and would trust him with my life as well as my wife and kids if it ever came to that.
I guess the social network sites can be used to find old friends. Even though I’ll never use the myspace account that I created except to see what my kids are posting, I can still login and see his stuff. I’m really looking forward to restarting up a old friendship that really never ended, we just lost contact and almost to the exact date, he thought of me when he went to the ball game and that same day, I asked his cousin about him.
